In today’s learning environments the need for accessible and reliable network, storage and workstation efficiency is constantly becoming an issue students and faculty face every day. In order for students to learn and become proficient in new hardware and software developments they must be exposed to current, emerging, and future computing technologies that are being used today. This proposal is for the large investment in a virtualized data center with thin and full client integration network and that will benefit the following areas of student learning:
Improved student participation
Technology focused curriculum
Technology integration within the classroom
This proposal is designed to outline the necessary hardware and software for the development of a next generation virtualized data center relying on virtualization technologies and integrating a full and thin client network. This initial configuration will allow for a robust network infrastructure capable of supporting end user mobility to the highest capacity, data storage and recovery, heavy end-user traffic, and while at the same time be energy efficient and scalable for future growth. The following pages outline the hardware and software with a rational for each section.
An itemized budget is also available at the end of this proposal with specific details on hardware.
Item: HP Proliant DL360 G6
Item: HP BL680c Dual Quad-Core Xeon
Rationale: These units will incorporate virtualization technology and host a number of servers for student and staff use. These applications range from domain controllers, DNS Server, Web server, Mail servers, thin client servers and application servers
Item: APC Symmetra PX UPS – 20kW – 20000VA
Rational: This backup battery is designed to maintain and power all networking and server equipment in the data center to provide up to 3 hours of continuous run-time on the battery backup alone. This will allow all networking equipment to power down safely and permit users to continue working on laptops if the need arises.
client technology. Students and staff will
Item: HP Mobile thin client 6720t
Rational: These wireless thin client notebooks will offer even higher mobility to staff and students. They will be able to interact, create content, and collaborate with ease and with the added support from the virtualized desktop environment they can access files and content anywhere anytime.
Rational: These full client laptops will provide students and staff additional resources and full client hardware availability in order to run hardware intensive applications. In addition the units will also provide standard full client features including local data storage and user profiles.
Item: VM vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses
Rational: By integrating the latest in Virtual Server and Storage technology students and staff will be able to enjoy extremely high levels of uninterrupted network services. By virtualizing the data center energy costs will be dramatically reduced, zero to none server failures, and server infrastructure can be utilized as a cloud computer network making use all hardware resources to their fullest.
Item: Citrix XenDesktop Platinum License

4. Student driven learning: Once students are given the power, control, and challenge to be in charge of their own learning, students gain greater understanding and depth. The XO allows for students to discover, invent and create their own interpretations of the world through access to a number of tools, information and connections. Student motivation to learn will be increased through the empowerment of student driven learning- simply put, when student want to learn, they will learn. Whens tudents are engaged, and the XO assists in that engagement, students are more motivated to succeed and will participate in relevant authentic learning situations rather than those created for them.
5. Investment in education: Children are societies greatest reward and through investing in a child's future, you invest in the future of the world. Giving each child the opportunity to learn, to grow, to change, and to transform should not be denied to anyone. Instead, by giving an educational journey to a child through a one to one learning environemnt with the XO, students can shift the boundaries and limitations generations have placed upon them. Children given the right tools, the right direction, and the right support and encouragement can change this world. They will change the world through an investment in the XO which is ultimately an investment in a better future for them and for all children that will follow.
